What If?
What if there were a drug available
What if the medication was figured out a long time ago and was used in much higher doses
for other medical conditions, because it turned out to be a powerful anti-inflammatory in high doses?
What if it caused side-effects, at those higher doses (up to 80 MG, in the first month)? Many drugs are expected to have side-effects, as part of treatment, and they are in continued use because of their relative benefits to the patient.
What if the veterinary field decided to ignore the drug for low-dose birth control use (10 MG/month or less) because of the high-dose issues?
What if vet schools don't even teach the next generation of vets about the drug and its safe low-dose contraceptive use and the drug is being lost, though it has been well-studied and used in humans, cats, dogs, livestock and zoo animals for decades?
Stefano Romagnoli, a veterinary researcher, specializing in small animal reproduction, published a paper in 2015 that analyzed the excessive dosing of a drug used for a variety of feline medical and behavioral conditions and established the past doses of the drug as "High", "Medium" or "Low". He concluded that the "Low" dose is safe and effective for contraception in cats. This is the same dose used in two studies published in the veterinary literature in 1977.
And, here's the kicker - the dose that we need to prevent pregnancy in cats is actually so low that it doesn't qualify for the lower end of his "Low" dose! The dose we need is 0.5 mg, once a week. We can also give it to a group of cats twice a week, to make sure that every cat in the group gets a dose, even if they skip a couple of feedings and miss their weekly "medicine night". Many cats would receive a total dose of 1.0 mg/week. This is even too low to qualify for Dr. Romagnoli's "Low" dose, each week.
This is a MINI-DOSE, and that is all. A dose that no-one has even bothered to study, though Dr. Romagnoli has used it successfully, in his personal cats. Human birth control pills developed like this, too. High doses, lower doses and, eventually, The Mini-Pill. It doesn't take much to nudge the hormone signals a little bit off course. And a little bit is enough.
